April Fools: Guild Wars endgame armor replaced with stick figures

Guild Wars players lucky enough to have their 15K armor sets (like me!) will find their armor now transforms them into a stick figure. Monks rejoice; now it’ll take the opposing team ten whole seconds to figure out which player you are and mercilessly tear you apart. Your teammates will thank you for the additional heals.

Upon logging on, I discovered Guild Wars had exploded into impromptu break dancing parties (pictured) in the game’s areas that aren’t populated by hungry wildlife looking for a quick meal. As always, players who haven’t yet crafted their final armor set are left out of all the fun and scorned by enemies and allies alike.

April Fools: Video: The Legend of Zelda movie trailer

Filed under: April Fools, The Legend of Zelda, Video — wedge55 @ 11:48 AM

IGN has an exclusive first look at the trailer for the Legend of Zelda movie. If you’re allergic to blurry YouTube videos, be sure to head over to their site to view the trailer in glorious “high definition.” Here’s hoping IGN’s staff not knowing what HD means is the real April Fool’s Day joke here.

It looks like the upcoming movie will be based on fan-favorite Ocarina of Time, featuring all the time traveling, Hero of Time nonsense fans love. Message boards are no doubt already aflame over the choice to use a more traditional brown-haired Link over a newer blond model. At least it looks like Link will remain silent for the duration of the film, sparing us from any resulting “OMF LINK DOESNT SUOND EXATLY LIEK ME!!!1113″ complaints.

April Fools: Microsoft announces Xbox Live The Board Game, other peripherals

Never one to shy away from making money through special edition consoles and gimmicky peripherals, today Microsoft announced two new limited edition versions of the Xbox 360 as well as two new peripherals for the console.

The Xbox Live Board Game offers the ultimate casual 360 experience, allowing you to play against up to seven other players and unlock achievements by correctly answering trivia questions. The game requires an Xbox 360 to play, as the board itself connects to the console via a USB connection.

The new Xbox 360 Wireless Helmet allows you to experience any of the 360’s many first-person shooters like never before and features “AirFlow temperature control” to keep things nice and comfortable.

Microsoft also plans on bringing out Recon and Vintage versions of their console. The Recon Xbox 360 is “rugged, portable, and battery-powered,” and presumably less susceptible to those nasty red rings of death. The Vintage Xbox 360 is Microsoft’s attempt to bring the nostalgic, old school gamer into the Xbox fold, and features wood paneling in pine, maple, or oak finish and a retro USB joystick.

All four new products should be on store shelves this spring.

April Fools: The Battle of Amon Hen

turbine lord of the rings online amon hen chicken race

The Lord of the Rings Online’s next content patch, titled The Battle of Amon Hen, will introduce the fowl-peoples, a new playable race. This new race will feature their very own coop-style housing and will grow larger as you level up. The patch will also introduce the new Crossing the Road epic quest arc.

Turbine has already established themselves as the developer to beat when it comes to free post-release content. Their massive LotRO content patches have opened up new lands and features typically reserved for expansions. The fowl-peoples, however, mark the first new race Turbine has brought to the game. It will be interesting to see just how many players forsake their hobbits and choose to play as an even smaller race in the coming months.

April Fools: Blizzard does it right

World of Warcraft Coming to Consoles With Molten Core™

blizzard april fools molten core consoleAt long last, World of Warcraft is finally coming to consoles, though not exactly in the form many had hoped. Molten Core allows players to relive their first raiding experiences alone or with friends, and has a decidedly retro feel. Be sure to check out the concept art/screenshot comparisons. Once again, Blizzard has successfully replicated the distinct visual style of their talented artists in-game.

New Hero Class for Wrath of the Lich King: Bard

blizzard april fools world of warcraft bardCapitalizing on the success of Guitar Hero (and the recent Activision/Vivendi merger), Blizzard’s newest hero class allows players to wield a guitar-based keyboard peripheral and destroy their enemies with the power of rock. Wrath of the Lich King may just have the first bard class in the history of MMOs that players actually want to play. Blizzard has plenty of screenshots and concept art over at their official site as well as a few sample talents and an example of a level 70 epic bard axe.

New StarCraft II Unit: Tauren Marine

The obscure planet of Azeroth was found to harbor a dizzying selection of humans, mutants, and aliens in a state of perpetual superstition and conflict. The most physically imposing of these warrior races were the so-called ‘tauren,’ an anthropomorphic bovine genotype with super-human stamina, overpowered racial combat abilities, and bizarrely well-developed horticultural skills.

Orc marines were already included in Warcraft 3, so tauren marines for StarCraft II seems like a natural progression. Furthermore, Blizzard’s continual cross-pollination of its series suggests that the inevitable Blizzardcraft isn’t too far away.
